The Power of Color.
The Speed of Business.

High Performance in a Small Package
Certified to Print
Sitting is Believing
Digital Nirvana:  Barcodes and More.
Speed and Perfection are Expected

There's an old saying, purportedly Chinese, that goes, "May you live in interesting times."
No one will deny that the present age is certainly interesting, but for the printing industry these are also exciting times that are ripe with opportunity. While there are those who say print is no longer a relevant medium and will soon be replaced by electronic displays, print remains healthy and viable even as it undergoes profound changes. The opportunity —and excitement— lies in taking advantage of those changes and embracing game-changing new print technologies.

That excitement will be at full throttle at PRINT 09, the largest print trade show in North America, taking place September 11 through 16 at McCormick Place in Chicago. In Océ's booth you'll see how the opportunity of the future is The Power of Color. And The Speed of Business. If you can't get excited about the technologies being rolled out, check your pulse!

High Performance in a Small Package
Océ JetStream 1000

Taking center stage
in the Océ booth will be the new Océ JetStream 1000, the latest of the company's JetStream family of inkjet printers. But understand this: the Océ JetStream 1000 is not just another roll-fed inkjet print engine. This is the only continuous feed inkjet system available today that can print duplex pages within a single print engine and with  a 30 percent smaller footprint than most competitive machines. This means more performance in less floor space and far more capabilities and productivity than other competitive offerings and any machines it might replace.

The compact size belies its performance: It can print using up to six colors in a single pass while churning out 1,070 letter-size duplex pages per minute with a monthly duty cycle of up to 33 million impressions. Even more compelling for many printers, one of these "colors" can be Océ's unique integrated MICR ink, enabling a host of applications requiring the security only MICR provides. Its compact size and ability to integrate MICR into color and monochrome documents are persuasive advantages for print providers seeking a way to move up to full-color inkjet without getting a system with too much capacity, or one that takes up a lot of shop floor real estate.

All this performance also enables exceptional versatility. Speeding off the Océ JetStream 1000 at PRINT 09 will full color books, a newspaper, and trans-promo applications with integrated MICR and CPSA-compliant security features. There'll also be a survey containing a QR code, giving attendees the option of completing the survey online. (Don't know what a QR code is? Keep reading!)

With this new machine the Océ JetStream family now ranges from 537 to more than 3,000 letter-size pages per minute, and with MICR printing, delivers the broadest range of inkjet color printing capabilities available today.

Certified to Print
Photobooks and QR Codes

You know what photobooks are and maybe even have some. But QR codes?

Shorthand for Quick Response, QR codes are information-rich codes that can be included in many types of print  advertising and are readable by many "smartphones." Using the phone's camera to take a picture of a QR code in a print ad or outdoor display directs the phone's web browser to the advertiser's website. There you may find product information, special offers or a way to place an order. Tying a print ad to the web makes it more powerful while providing a reliable means of measuring ad and media effectiveness and actually growing a company's list of prospects.

Get a first hand look at QR codes in the Océ booth at PRINT 09, where ads with QR codes will be part of the Chicago issue of Where magazine. Océ is working with Output Links to produce the magazine using the Océ CS Tandem family of cut-sheet color presses. These multi-engine cut-sheet color printers are like no other system in the industry. Users can combine up to four CS665 Pro Fogra-certified print engines with a central server and color management software to create an affordable, versatile and scalable way of adding consistent graphic arts quality color to their operation based on real world business requirements.

The heart of the system is the two-engine, CT 130 Pro, which earned a Best of Show at the AIIM/On Demand conference earlier this year. In addition to Where magazine, it will be printing full-page color photographs and a full-color case-bound photo book showcasing the color quality ensured through Fogra certification. This formalized process encompasses color management, production proofs, makeready, and sampling of at least 5,000 prints, resulting in a Process Standard Offset [PSO] certification based on ISO 12647-2. This provides proof of the quality a device is capable of and serves to ensure smooth production an increased customer satisfaction.

Still more to see at PRINT 09

Sitting is Believing
Imagine printing on a 100 percent recyclable substrate, then building a chair out of the material. That's the kind of thing one can do with Re-Board and Océ display graphics innovation. Océ's Arizona family of printers, known for its ability to print on both roll fed and rigid substrates, will printing on Re-Board, showing how sustainable materials can open up fresh areas of opportunity for new business and revenue. Sitting is believing, so be sure to watch the Océ Arizona 350 XT in action and pick up your own Re-Board chair before you leave.

Do more with 5
Spot color does more than add a little extra flash to a page. It can also convey critical information. For example, a fifth color is essential for the aeronautical navigation and charting tools produced by Jeppesen on the Océ ColorStream 10050. At PRINT 09 the Océ ColorStream 10050 will be showing how adding a spot color not only expands the range of colors that can be printed, but makes new applications possible.

More Speed
Speed remains a critical consideration because it's tied so tightly to productivity, reduction of labor costs and even the potential to replace several slower machines with a faster one. At PRINT 09 Océ will show some new ways print providers can gain the advantages of speed with new cut-sheet and continuous feed machines pushing the speed barrier to new heights. These new systems are not just faster but feature new levels of both print quality and productivity.

And there's even more. Like a new way to determine costs and predict profitability. And that's something really exciting!

Zebra Print Solutions
Speed and Perfection are Expected

Zebra Print Solutions, a North Carolina full-service print provider that specializes in rapid turnaround of complex, high-volume marketing and training materials is accustomed to fast turnarounds and the need for perfection. The service portfolio includes design, pre-press, digital and offset printing, bindery services, CD and DVD replication, archiving, variable data printing, mailing and fulfillment, advertising specialty items and customer printshop management.

“Our clients consider one defect in a thousand to be far too many," says Patrick DiLeonardo, President, Zebra Print Solutions. "At the same time, many of our jobs must be turned around in 24 hours or less,”

Given the firm’s intense focus on quality, accuracy and process efficiency, Zebra selected Océ PRISMAprepare document preparation software to streamline job definition, preparation and proofing, quickly make global changes to complex jobs, and simplify tab production and updates.

“With Océ PRISMAprepare software, we can construct, define, proof and benchmark an entire job ahead of time. So, when the client says go, all we have to do is print, " explains DiLeonardo.

Océ PRISMAprepare software is an all-in-one solution designed to speed up job preparation, making it easy to perform prepress tasks like creating booklets, impositioning, color splitting and merging, and adding trim marks for complex jobs. Users can preview every step in the preparation process on screen, eliminating the need for hard copy proofing, while making it easy to assign media attributes, define tabs and tab captions, create inserts, add blank pages and more at the click of a mouse.

Zebra implemented Océ DPconvert software to convert a huge library of Xerox RDO files, along with their DigiPath and Freeflow Makeready job tickets into open-standard PDF file formats. This allows them to open up their printing possibilities and migrate away from proprietary data formats.

“With Océ PRISMAprepare software, Zebra has a comprehensive tool to streamline time-consuming manual tasks and complete jobs in less time, at a lower cost, while maintaining high quality standards,” notes Eric de Goeijen, Vice President, Product Marketing, Océ North America, Production Printing Systems division.

Based on Adobe PDF technology, Océ PRISMAprepare software recently received the Poligrafia exhibit Gold Medal award.  Océ PRISMAprepare software has already earned a number of awards, including a 2008 Nielsen Norman Group award for the ten best-designed applications in 2008 and an IF Design award for usability.

High-speed digital duplex black & white printing
Zebra Print also needed new digital duplex printing systems capable of handling growing volumes quickly, as well as the coated stock and pre-punched media often required to produce complex training materials. Two Océ VarioPrint 6200 digital duplex systems fit the bill. The machines are part of the award-winning Océ VarioPrint 6000 family, the world’s most productive digital duplex printing systems. "We are always looking for ways to improve our client offerings by providing the most advanced technologies," says CEO of Zebra Print Solutions, Charlotte DiLeonardo.
