Océnomics:
Turning Challenges into Opportunities

People go to printing trade shows to see new technologies -- especially equipment-- that offer new opportunities. Anyone visiting the Océ stand at PRINT 09 in Chicago was not disappointed because every corner of the spacious booth offered up innovative machines and applications that clearly demonstrated that the company has powerful printing systems for virtually every segment of printing. Even though show attendance was only moderate this year, the Océ booth attracted print providers looking for systems that let them do more with less yet have the flexibility needed in today's changing marketplace.

Video: Touring the Booth with Mal Baboyian
Several key printing systems were stationed around the perimeter of the Océ booth in McCormick Place at PRINT 09. Mal Baboyian, president of Océ North America's Production Printing Systems Division, gave industry analyst Noel Ward a tour of some of Océ's latest offerings, including the new Océ JetStream 1000, the Océ VarioPrint 6320, the Océ CS130T, and the Océ ColorStream 10050. Watch the video to get a look at the machines and the advantages they bring to market.

The system that attracted the most attention was the new JetStream 1000 six-color inkjet press with MICR capability. This system, making its world debut at PRINT 09, is unique in several important ways. First, is that it can print up to six colors, one of which can be MICR ink. Next is that unlike all other continuous feed inkjet printers (and most electrophotographic systems as well) it can print both sides of a page in one pass through the machine, rather than requiring another press to print the back side of the page. This gives the machine a very compact footprint for its performance, enabling it to fit easily into a wider range of print shops than many of the twin engine systems on the market. Combining a print speed of 250 feet per minute yielding a throughput of some 1,050 letter-size pages per minute, the JetStream 1000 is an attractive option for a broad range of print providers. At PRINT, one of the applications was a lavish, full-color cookbook, demonstrating the system's potential to transform traditional book publishing on the one hand, while also being able to handle transactional printing with full CPSA-certified check printing on the other.

Be sure to watch the video for more details.

Ultra Means More Performance

Building on the proven foundation of the award-winning VarioPrint 6000 family of cut-sheet printers, Océ rolled out the new VarioPrint 6320 Ultra, bearing the mantel of world's fastest perfecting digital cut-sheet press at 306 letter-size pages per minute. The line includes models ranging in speed from 160 to 306 pages per minute and capable of monthly print volumes of up to 10 million impressions. To provide the investment protection all printers need, the lower speed models are all field upgradeable and the VarioPrint 160 Ultra and VarioPrint 200 Ultra models have the unique capability to increase their throughput to meet peak production volumes with Speed Pass.

An industry first, Océ SpeedPass is a convenient, flexible program designed to accelerate a printer's productivity and profits, without risk or long-term financial commitment. It is a simple, on-demand speed license that temporarily increases their existing Océ VarioPrint engine speed to 250 ppm. This is an ideal solution for print providers facing periodic high production demands but don't have overall volumes high enough to justify an investment in a faster system for regular use.

Based on Océ Gemini Instant Duplex technology, this duplex printer series takes monochrome speed to new heights. With ultra-fast speed and benchmark reliability, print professionals can take on more jobs and turn them around faster, enter profitable new markets like digital book printing, expand services and do more with less, all while reducing costs and environmental impact. The result is a win-win proposition that delivers business stimulus benefits, expands opportunities, and optimizes resources and investment protection.

Conference at PRINT 09

Océ not only had a lot to see at PRINT 09, the company had a lot to say about how its product offerings fit the needs of many different type of print providers. From transactional and transpromo printing, to book production, to direct mail, and large format, Océ now offers one of the most complete product lines in the industry. At a press conference on the opening day of the show, Mal Baboyian explained not just what is available today, but gave a glimpse of things to come.

Océnomics:
Turning Challenges into Opportunities

There's a saying that captures the promise hidden in today's challenging market conditions. "Tough times don’t last. Tough companies do." Today’s tough companies are looking to reinvent themselves, to operate leaner and profit from new opportunities. These are the companies most likely to thrive because they are willing to retool, embrace new technologies and offer a broader portfolio of services. For many companies, the first instinct in tough times is to suspend capital investments. While it may seem counterintuitive, history shows that the inverse is true. The companies that take a long-term view and invest in growth succeed. Strategic investments in the future and improvements that drive efficiency and create opportunity today can make a critical difference tomorrow.

A new Océ white paper educates print professionals in corporate and commercial environments about the value of “investing to win” during turbulent economic times. It explores current challenges facing print operations and a unique approach called Océnomics that can help transform tough times into profitable opportunity. It highlights actions print businesses can take to implement a digital infrastructure that allows them to capitalize on opportunities, increase profits today and position their businesses for success tomorrow. And it explores the four pillars of Océnomics and how they’re helping specific businesses and entire industries transform their business models.
