Over twenty years ago the Brundtland Report, also known as Our Common Future, alerted the world to the urgency of fostering economic development that could be sustained without depleting natural resources or harming the environment. The key word is "sustain." Developed and published by a group of politicians, civil servants and experts on the environment and development, from around the world, the report made what has come to be the touchstone statement on sustainability, defining it as an approach in which the needs of the present are met "without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

While the Brundtland Report focused on broad-based issues of sustainable economic development, sustainability is every bit as important at local levels and even at that of individual businesses. Virtually every industry today finds itself seeking ways to ensure it operates in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner. The printing industry, in all its forms, is no exception and Océ has an industry-leading approach.

Sustainability and Customer Needs
The Balance of Solutions & Benefits

Even though sustainability is on the agenda for many companies and of growing importance for the general public, Océ research has shown that is it still not among the top five buying criteria for most of Océ's customers and prospects. This will certainly change over time, especially as sustainability becomes more intertwined with the key purchase decision points: Reliability, productivity, quality, cost, safe investment and ease of use. As it turns out, sustainability and customer needs go hand in hand.

Research also showed that with respect to the environment, customers care most about avoiding wasted prints, reducing energy consumption, reusing materials, and minimizing emissions in the working environment--all issues closely tied to sustainability. So while customers may not cite sustainability as a top five they clearly care about these issues. The following table shows how Océ addresses each of the key purchase criteria and environmental concerns and ties them to measurable sustainability benefits.

These practices, combined with other Océ approaches to sustainability, demonstrate Océ's strategy for addressing customers' day-to-day printing and copying, needs while also providing sustainable benefits that match customers' environmental concerns. Océ Selected as a Climate Action Industry Partner
Industry leading distinction

Océ has been recognized as an environmental leader in printing and document management through its selection as a Climate Action industry partner. Climate Action is an international communications platform that informs a worldwide network of businesses, the United Nations, government and non-governmental organizations in promoting organizational and individual actions to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically sustainable levels. As a result of this selection, Océ N.V. will participate in a series of activities focused on protecting and preserving the environment. These include a "Climate Leaders" video interview with Rokus van Iperen, CEO of Océ N.V., on the Climate Action web site in support of the United Nation's World Environment Day.

As the only company in the document production industry to earn this distinction, Océ has been selected as a Climate Action industry partner based on the company's exemplary record of environmentally sustainable products and business practices. These include the CarbonPositivePlus+ project, which provides access to eco-friendly initiatives and carbon offsetting credits for customers who purchase or lease Océ VarioPrint 6000 digital duplex cut-sheet printers. These printers use an estimated 45 percent less energy than conventional dual-pass systems and are designed to minimize environmental impact at every stage of operation, from low emissions and energy savings to optimized asset recovery at the end of the product lifecycle. Products like the Océ VarioPrint 6000 family, coupled with environmentally focused design such as that of the new, solvent-free Océ CrystalPoint™ technology underscore the company's world-leading "green" credentials and commitment to solutions that minimize environmental impact. Océ CrystalPoint technology, developed to deliver high-quality color and black & white output on plain and recycled paper emits no ozone, odor, or fine powder.

Climate Action has acknowledged Océ for "doing the right thing" in terms of earth-friendly operations and for a five-point sustainability policy that guides the company's actions. The sustainability policy focuses on minimizing incorrect and unnecessary printing, minimizing energy consumption, maximizing reuse of materials and minimizing non-reusable waste, and minimizing emissions of ozone, dust and toner.

Océ VarioPrint 6250 Aces 10 Million Page Durability Test
Reliability and ease of use key factors

The popular and innovative Océ VarioPrint 6250 system emerged from a comprehensive evaluation by Buyers Laboratory, one of the leading independent providers of competitive intelligence, testing and reviews for the office equipment industry with the coveted “Highly Recommended” rating plus a BLI Certificate of Reliability.

10 Million Impressions later…
The Highly Recommended rating is reserved exclusively for devices that deliver outstanding features and complete rigorous testing. The Certificate of Reliability verifies that when the system was subjected to a durability test consisting of no less than ten million impressions in a networked environment, the system demonstrated a special level of reliability. According to BLI’s report during the “extensive 10 million-page test, "…the unit proved to be highly reliable, experiencing a misfeed rate of just one per 333,333 impressions, and not a single job from the wide array of complex production-class jobs was produced incorrectly.”

In its report, BLI also highlighted other aspects of the Océ VarioPrint 6250 system, referring to it as “a groundbreaking production device” with “the simplest paper path of models in the marketplace.” Furthermore, “the touch-screen panel is easy to navigate…and also provides excellent instructions…on the various maintenance tasks…intuitive and straightforward.”

David Sweetnam, European Lab and Research Manager of BLI International, said, “During our exhaustive testing of the Océ VarioPrint 6250, the device delivered a very high level of productivity across a wide range of job types and media options. The attention to ease of use during device development was apparent from both a device and desktop operation standpoint, with BLI trained key operators able to get additional members of staff up to speed on use of the device quickly.”

“We are proud to be recognized by BLI for the unique value of the Océ VarioPrint 6250 system and its ability to stand up under the most rigorous testing. The ‘Highly Recommended’ rating and the Certificate of Reliability testify to the system’s outstanding image registration accuracy, media flexibility, intrinsic printer reliability and low energy use,” said Eric De Goeijen, Vice President of Marketing, Océ.

The BLI report concluded “During the course of its evaluation, the Océ VarioPrint 6250 proved to be highly productive, with throughput speed remaining constant, regardless of media and job type.” In summary, the report noted, “BLI highly recommends the Océ VarioPrint 6250 for production environments” and has a “high level of confidence in the suitability of the unit for Océ’s recommended monthly duty cycle of eight million impressions.”
