Roll Over Gutenberg
Writing the book on digital printing

Set the Time Machine to the mid-15th century. An innovative German named Johannes Gutenberg has combined his deep knowledge of metallurgy and growing impatience with the high costs and slow processes used to print books to invent movable type. His innovation would allow bookmakers to create infinite combinations of words and phrases an infinite number of times, and thereby produce quantities of books at a reasonable cost. Gutenberg couldn't have imagined his creation would change how people learn, share ideas and communicate, much less make him one of the most important figures of the second millennium. But it did, and in celebration of "The Book," Océ took the opportunity of drupa to launch Roll Over Gutenberg, a digitally printed book about the history --and on-demand future-- of books.

Roll Over Gutenberg is a two-hundred-page volume in color and black and white that was produced on Océ systems each day at drupa. With this book, Océ shows how high quality color and monochrome pages can be merged inline in an automated production workflow. The book combines prints from the Océ VarioPrint 6250 (black & white) and the Océ CS650 Pro (color). Océ PRISMAprepare managed the workflow, separating the black-and-white and color portions of the document and ensuring the page data was routed to the appropriate press. It then took charge of the post-print merging to reassemble and finish the product using inline finishing equipment.

Roll Over Gutenberg has to be seen to be appreciated, so take a virtual look and imagine how Gutenberg would react to the speed, flexibility and power of the VarioPrint 6250 and the CS650 Pro used to print this title, or the VarioStream 9210 presses that are changing how a growing number of titles are being printed every day at some of the leading book manufacturers.
