Color, the New Black
Simplifying Print Production
Océ ColorStream 9000

There is little doubt that high speed ink jet is the next big shift in printing technology. Although ink jet systems are all digital devices they are not simply replacements for toner based machine. Where ink jet systems are really destined is to displace offset printing technology. Like any profound change, this won't happen overnight, yet some systems that will soon be reaching the market provide a clear alternative to offset and offer lower production costs while changing the dynamics of industries such as publishing. Other ink jet devices will replace electrophotographic systems with faster, more productive models offering full color printing and lower operating costs. The age of high speed ink jet printers is upon us.

 The Océ JetStream Evolution
Wide and fast equals game-changing productivity

Much of the talk in the printing industry has been about whether ink jet systems can make high speed color printing cost-efficient for a wide range of applications. Yet black-only printing still constitutes an enormous range of applications around the world, so how does a print provider meet the demand to produce both color and black-only printing? Among the leading advantages of ink jet technology is its scalability, not only in terms of speed, but in the ease with which a single machine can be used to print just one color while still providing a clear migration path for the leap to high-speed color printing.

To support customers migrating from black-only to full color printing, Océ is introducing new configurations of its Océ JetStream family optimized for black-only printing, yet which can easily be field-upgraded to full color printing. Customers benefit from excellent price-performance with a single color while establishing a foundation for adding colors as business requirements change. This ability is especially important for high-volume transactional, direct mail and transpromo applications which are gradually migrating to full color. But the speed and low cost of black-only ink jet printing also offers clear advantages for book and newspaper publishers, where companies are struggling with rising costs and shifting market expectations in a challenging economy.

Wide and fast equals high productivity
The 29.5" print width of the JetStream 2800 system is the widest in its class. Complimenting this is speed, some seven percent faster than competitive wide format digital color systems, and capable of producing 2,632 A4 size or 2,792 letter size images per minute at 600 x 600 dpi. The system incorporates a field upgradeable growth path from monochrome up to full color enabling cost-efficient print production of newspapers, books, direct mail and other jobs.

This width and speed presents book publishers a compelling alternative to offset: a less expensive way to produce up to about 3,500 copies of a title --well below the typical minimum run length for offset book presses. This range, explains Manfred Maier, CTO at Océ Printing Systems in Poing, Germany, can help keep publishers from building inventories of books that sell only in low quantities yet are produced in runs of about 5,000 copies due to the economics of offset technology. This type of press is the next step in the evolution of book manufacturing from offset to digital, as well as for some types of direct mail and other commercial apps such as newspapers and packaging.

Fast, Compact & Flexible
Océ JetStream 500 and 1000

The speed and productivity of the Océ JetStream family that made it ideal for ultra-high volume applications is now available for print shops with more moderate requirements. The simplex Océ JetStream 500 and duplex Océ JetStream1000 systems now bring JetStream technology and productivity to users with monthly print volumes of up to 20 million impressions.

The new Océ JetStream 500 and Océ JetStream 1000 engines are the most flexible full color web presses available for transaction, direct mail and trans-promo applications. Compact and full-featured, these systems are the first inkjet systems to offer full-width duplex in a single cabinet that is up to 60%smaller than competing systems. This lets customers enter the production color arena without a major impact on floor space. The JetStream 500 model prints approximately 505 A4 (535 letter) images per minute at 600x600 dpi, while the duplex JetStream 1000 delivers up to 1,010 A4 (1,070 letter) images per minute.

Because the migration to full color takes time, customers can begin with black-only simplex printing and field upgrade to full color and up to six colors, including fully integrated MICR printing for more flexibility than any other inkjet engine. The MICR capability allows printing of convenience and full-color checks with complete reliability, security and error recovery.

With these three new models, the Océ JetStream family represents the most consistent and complete ink jet product line in the industry, addressing the market requirements of an expanding base of users. The Océ JetStream 2800 system will be available for shipment by early 2010, while JetStream 500 and 1000 systems are planned for the end of 2009 with general availability in early 2010.

The Uniqueness of JetStream
What sets the Océ JetStream family apart from other ink jet technologies is its scalability. Every model uses the same overall engine design, inks and print heads. All are field upgradeable within their speed ranges so customers can easily migrate from monochrome to full color and all can be configured with MICR inks. While different controllers are needed based on system configuration, all are based on the same Océ SRA controllers running PRISMA workflows that help make the Océ JetStream some of the most productive digital print engines available. This makes the JetStream a proven system with known reliability and productivity for a wide range of applications.

Océ CS Tandem
High Speed for Color Cutsheet Printing

Take up to four Océ CS 65 Pro color printers, add a centralized server, sophisticated color management software, and Fogra-certified color consistency and the result is a new level of color performance in an integrated system based on powerful and affordable color print engines. The new Océ CS Tandem family of color printers gives print providers looking to enter the production color market have a real alternative to offset presses and large, expensive color digital printers. Available in multi-engine Océ CS130Tpro, Océ CS195Tpro and Océ CS260Tpro configurations, engine speeds range from 130, 195 and 260 ppm respectively.

Combining FograCert print engines with color management methods developed by Océ, the Océ CS Tandem family produces a high level of color accuracy and repeatability across multiple print engines. It is the first production color platform to be designated a FograCert Validation Printing System, a third-party validation that documents predictable, consistent and measurable quality. In addition to providing access to expanded color capabilities and capacities, Océ CS Tandem systems integrate with existing PDF/X workflows. By providing color-accurate results within tighter tolerances than offset print providers can mix digital and offset jobs or move from offset to digital without sacrificing quality.

Using a centralized workflow, an operator can choose twin, triplex or quadplex configurations, with multiple inline finishing options and three speed bands. This workflow improves productivity and accelerates turnaround by providing enhanced visibility and control, intelligent job routing and reliable error recovery. In addition, operators have on-the-spot flexibility that allows them to load-balance jobs across a group of printers as workloads fluctuate. As a result, the systems are ideally suited for in-house printshops, digital print shops, and commercial printers that need vibrant and consistent color quality, configuration flexibility, and machine backup with production capacity.

The Océ CS Tandem systems are available in the USA in April 2009.
