Coming halfway
between drupa 2008 and 2012, IPEX consumes over a week in Birmingham,
UK. In 2010,
IPEX is an important show at an interesting and crucial time in the
printing
industry. With economies around the globe
trying to recover, and the place of print in the media mix changing,
selecting the print engines and software that can ensure profitability
is a
daunting challenge. For most print providers, speed, quality,
flexibility, and
reliability have never been more important, and as the doors open at
IPEX, Océ
has a lot to show that differentiates it from the competition. It's
about
business... and getting back to growth.
The Quest for the True Cost of Inkjet Printing TrueCost
helps ensure accurate pricing...and profitability
Whether a digital press uses dry toner or liquid ink, at least 30 percent of the TCO "pie" is the cost of that ink or toner. This is a critical component to track and measure, especially for inkjet where a miscalculation on the amount of ink required a job spanning tens of thousands of pages can have a severe implications. Underestimate the cost and the profits go away. Overestimate, and a job may be priced too high and the business lost. But no more.
TrueCost, a new software tool from Océ designed
specifically for the Océ JetStream family, not only tracks and helps
estimate costs, it learns about the jobs a customer runs to help provide
accurateand profitablejobs over time.
helps us count every single droplet, no matter what size they
are, and report it out of the JetStream," explains Guy Broadhurst, Vice
President, New Technologies and Client Development at Oce North America
Production Printing Systems Division. "This gives the customer
information on coverage and how much ink is used. It is the first tool
in the industry that shows exactly how much a job costs in ink."
Generating
an initial cost calculation using the TrueCost
tool is as simple as running a small sample of the color job. The
software calculates the exact number of dots for every color in a
sample, breaking out percentages of cyan, magenta, yellow, black, MICR
or spot color coverage. Being able to calculate usage and costs in this
way gives print providers more precise data for formulating quotes to
help them run their businesses more efficiently.
In addition, the
Océ PRISMAproduction TrueCost tool "remembers" ink consumption on a
job-by-job basis for every document printed on the Océ JetStream system.
As a result, print providers can look up historical pricing data on
jobs weeks or months after they're printed. In addition, they can
determine which jobs are making or losing money and ensure that all
costs are in line. Print providers benefit from the ability to quickly
generate accurate, competitive quotes, which helps improve
profitability, enhance customer satisfaction and keep tight control of
consumables cost and usage.

One in a Million CPI
Antony Rowe prints its millionth run
Europe's leading
short-run book manufacturer, CPI Antony Rowe, and Océ are celebrating
the book
manufacturer's continuing increase in sales for short-run digital book
production and the achievement of printing the millionth run of a single
book.
Demonstrating
technology leadership in short-run digital book production, CPI Antony
Rowe is
leading the way for economically printing short-run books digitally,
thanks to
more investment at its manufacturing plant in the United Kingdom. The
book
printer, which now has five Océ VarioPrint® cut-sheet print production
presses, has completed its millionth print run of a single copy.
Over 30,000 orders per month Those single copy titles add up quickly for CPI Antony Rowe, part of the Europe-wide CPI Group. One of the first companies to produce books digitally in the 1990s, it made its first investment in two Océ VarioPrint production presses back in 2007. Since then, the location has experienced double-digit growth. The systems now run 24/7. The machines pump out short-run books, meeting demand for over 30,000 orders per month, with many as small as a single copy.
The company's service offering supports the complete life cycle of a book from printing a single test copy through to fulfilling a global order of millions once a title has established itself. This, together with investing in the latest technology, has led to a 30% increase in sales over the last year at CPIs cutting-edge Eastbourne site, which has boosted its annual revenue to nearly $6 million.
We demonstrated our confidence in Océs VarioPrint 6000 technology, including the latest Ultra high-speed press, when we added a fifth machine in September 2009," says General Manager Martyn Collyer. "That acquisition was based entirely on the financial benefits of our four previous systems. Our Eastbourne site had experienced significant, double-figure growth since the first two machines were installed in 2007.
The short-run digital book market remains a growth market, and the Eastbourne operation is determined to continue to expand through partnering with technological and strategic minded companies like Océ," affirms Collyer. "This will be crucial to the development and sustainability of our business moving forwards.
